Women of Science
Across the Ocean, but on the Same Wavelength "“I wanted to create a new way that we talk about science, and the lives of scientists – in particular female scientists. Rather than hearing about the skills needed, the work hours, and the qualifications – I wanted to share the [...]
STEM Sister Emily Paszkiewicz
(The following is a guest blog by STEM Sister Emily Paszkiewicz) Though I had never seen myself as a science-minded person, my experiences in high school have motivated me to become an engineer. My initial exposure to the subject was during a summer school course through Johns Hopkins University. [...]

Inspiring 11-Year-Old: RoboGabby "During this past Summer (2016), I signed up for an all girls robotics camp that was being offered by my school...they cancelled the camp because not enough girls signed up. My dad found other robotics camps for me to attend, but, there were only about 4 [...]

Not Just Another Pretty Face "It was very evident to me that the female students at Caltech were excelling just as well as their male counterparts and were also displaying innate talent and academic brilliance. If anything this gender gap really just spurs me on, I wanna show people [...]
The Formula to Get Girls & Young Women into STEM
Awareness + Belief + Connection = STEM Sisterhood As the founder of STEM Sisterhood, I am continually thinking about how to get more girls and women interested in science, technology, engineering and math. For some reason, I always come back to A + B + C or Awareness + Belief + Connection. [...]
Faces of STEM…Today
The faces of STEM - science, technology, engineering and math are changing. There are still way fewer women in most of these fields, but progress has been made. I recently came across a fascinating photo which captured my attention. The photograph is of Albert Einstein and 5 other prominent scientists [...]
WELCOME TO STEM SISTERHOOD
Showcasing Talented Women to Increase Girls in STEM
There are not enough girls in STEM!
The numbers are staggering! In the United States, 55% of all 4-year college students are women and close to half of the overall workforce is female. Yet, women are still vastly underrepresented in science, technology, engineering and math careers. And, this is after decades of initiatives (both public and private) to increase the numbers of women in these fields.
Most of these initiatives and programs seem or fall into 2 categories:
- High level, bureaucratic/academic solutions
- Admirable, but mostly local solutions
There’s nothing wrong with either of these approaches and we are certain that the people involved in these are dedicated and caring. But, in many cases the message or the delivery simply miss the mark or are not reaching a wide enough audience.
There are many theories on why there are so few women in science, technology, engineering and math careers and plenty of disagreement. In reality, it doesn’t really matter what the causes HAVE been, but rather what the SOLUTIONS can be:
Enter STEM Sisterhood…
STEM Sisterhood was founded to take a different approach to the challenge of increasing the number of women in science, technology, engineering and math careers.
Reaching girls at key learning ages (11-16), inspiring them by showcasing amazing women already succeeding in STEM fields and providing a (virtual) community for women to encourage, support and challenge each other.
STEM SISTERHOOD’S MISSION:
- Build AWARENESS – Use STEM Sisterhood website and relevant social media platforms to reach young women of all backgrounds with the message that “STEM can be for them”
- Cultivate BELIEF – Showcase successful women already succeeding in STEM careers to inspire girls and young women to follow their lead
- Establish CONNECTION – Grow STEM Sisterhood into a virtual community for girls and women in STEM fields to encourage, support and challenge each other
STEM SISTERS ARE GIRLS & WOMEN WHO:
- Share a common passion for the disciplines of science, technology, engineering and math
- Are committed to encouraging, supporting and challenging each other
- Believe when on STEM Sister succeeds we all benefit collectively and change the world in powerful ways
